Running out of money in retirement is one of the biggest fears for retirees—and for good reason. To avoid it, you need a smart, disciplined plan. Start by creating a detailed retirement budget that accounts for essential expenses, lifestyle goals, and unexpected costs like healthcare. Then match those expenses with reliable income sources—Social Security, pensions, annuities, rental income, or systematic withdrawals from investment accounts.
Avoid overspending early in retirement. Many retirees spend too much in the “go-go years,” not realizing they could live 30 years or more in retirement. Consider using a dynamic withdrawal strategy that adjusts based on market conditions rather than a fixed percentage.
Be mindful of inflation and market risk. A portfolio too heavily weighted in low-return assets like cash may lose purchasing power, but one that’s too aggressive could crater in a downturn. Regular portfolio rebalancing and possibly working with a fiduciary financial adviser can help maintain the right mix.
Finally, consider long-term care insurance or other safeguards so a health crisis doesn’t wipe out your savings. Planning ahead is key to lasting peace of mind
